Preying On The Desperate

The cartel smuggling techniques vary from area to area, but the cartels' modus operendi can be downright ruthless. They prey on the vulnerable, poor, and desperate with absolutely no regard for human life. One must remember that the the cartels' ultimate goal is money. One the other side of that coin is Americans' demand for drugs. On that point, you can read my other post "Having Fun With Mary Jane".

Below is a link to a video that shows one of the ruthless ploys cartel use to smuggle their loads across the border. This is a technique Border Patrol agents in my AOR refer to as a "goose chase" or "diversion". The video is about 13 minutes but well worth the view.

As you can see, not all smugglers have evil intent but the fact is that they sometimes they put their lives at risk just for a chance at survival in the slums and gang infested areas of Mexico and Central America. The boy in video did what he did out of desperation to help his mother with medication not knowing he was being used as a decoy. While he may be returned to Mexico without charges, what's to say he won't try again once he is older and wiser?

"Poor Mexico, so far from God and so close to the United States."
